There's a reason Lloyds of London insured Betty Grable's lady legs for a million. Paired pedials provide the functional support for the preponderance of our daily toils and they comprise nearly 50 percent of our structural aesthetic. Yet these graceful gams are delicate creatures, prone to spots, dimples, and spiders among other natural effects.
Whether your knees hang low or your lower inhibitions run high for some other reason, there are few things more devastating than the perfect skirt with a prematurely abrupt hemline.
My own shy legs have diligently and sorrowfully sought a solution to this tragedy for many, many seasons. When I came across Vintage Hem, I begged Mrs. Jennifer to share her solution with my readers. Her concurrence is followed by my gushing testimonial.
1. Slim
Perhaps you have tried layering a longer skirt underneath a shorter dress. First this solution only works for a full skirt, second this adds quite a mess of volume to a lower figure's already sturdy thighs. Vintage Hem on the other leg is a clean fitted slip which adds no additional bulk and keeps your outer skirt from sticking to your legs.
2. Details
Each vintage hem is composed from display ready materials. Since I have also tried layering a traditional slip with a pretty hem underneath a mini dress, I can confidently report that there is nothing flattering about being told that your slip is showing, even if you are intentionally showing it.
3.Quality
The materials and construction of each of these slips is sugar fairy dusted. In other words, they are lovely, very well constructed and Cardigan Empire approved.
Should your underpinnings drawer need such a staple, you can enter up to two times for a chance to win your own Vintage Hem Slip.
Wishing Well 1: Visit Vintage Hem Store and leave a comment on this Cardigan Empire post detailing which slip you think would solve your short skirted snafu.
Wishing Well 2: Become a Cardigan Empire follower so you can continue to hear about more closet miracles.
The winner of Shy Legs Giveaway will be selected on Friday, January 1st. The winner will receive a $25 Vintage Hem Gift Certificate.
I have wanted one of these for about a year now (ever since I discovered them) I LOVE the Eyelet tower and Effies dessert, lady vanilla. What an awesome giveaway!
ReplyDeleteOh I love Have a Ball in white!!! So frilly!
ReplyDeleteI love Neenie's Cup of Tea! I bought a black and white dress from BR for work, only to confirm that indeed, my gams are longer from hip to knee than from knee to ankle, making this dress wayyyy more mini than is work-appropriate.
ReplyDeleteFun for playtime, but I'd love to wear it to work and this would be just the thing!
Merry Christmas - enjoy this first precious one with Miss Coco!
I've been wanting to check out Vintage Hem, but just haven't made it over to the website! Have a Ball (in Ivory) would work with so many items in my wardrobe!
ReplyDeleteI think that the damsel in distress and neenie's cup of tea are nice. Now that I have found these, I feel that I can look around for dresses that were previously thought too short! Hooray!
ReplyDelete~Paula
i adore the eyelet tower and have wanted it for a long time now!! this would be superb!
ReplyDeleteI love the eyelet tower. It would work perfectly under one of my skirts. I love the layers.
ReplyDeleteThose are so perfect! I love the lady vanilla and the damsel in distress. OKay. I love them all.
ReplyDeletethe silver spoon would have to be my fav. since I wasn't born with one in my mouth, it would be fun to finally have one at least ;). but the lady vanilla is a very close second, I want to recreate the entire outfit that darling girl is wearing to be honest!
ReplyDeletehappy merrying to you and thanks for the fun and practical advice.
I love love love Dot the Great. I think that the Eyelet tower is pretty great too. Either one would look really great with this skirt I bought but hardly ever wear because I feel like it is too short!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is Have a Ball (Ivory). It is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteWow! Just what I've been looking for! My favorites are Silver Spoon, Effie's Dessert - Lady Vanilla, and Have a Ball - Antique Gold.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I'm also a follower.
ReplyDeleteNeat! I remember seeing something similar a couple years back -- more vintage looking, but many times as expensive. This will suit my style and budget, both.
ReplyDeleteThe Silver Spoon is by far the coolest, if also sold out!! Effie's dessert in biscotti is a close second, however.
I LOVE the eyelet tower! So cute and ruffley :)
ReplyDeleteand I'm a follower!
ReplyDeleteI love the Have A Ball in black! Great solution to a too-short-skirt problem!
ReplyDeleteI like Have a Ball in any of the colors, but I'd probably go with black.

ReplyDeleteBrit
I love love love the have a ball in antique gold. I have an amazing black a-line that I love but is border line too short. The antique gold would look great under this little black skirt!
ReplyDeleteI love the "have a ball, all black," and am a follower! These are so cute!
ReplyDeleteI like Dot the Great and Silver Spoon (too bad it's sold out!). Great giveaway!
ReplyDeletePS I'm also a follower. :)
I love the 'eyefull of lace' - so cute!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely Neenie's Cup of Tea, Chammomile would solve a lot of my dilemmas! I'm short, so I think that this would bode well with the majority of my garments that I tend to layer. I also really like Effie's Dessert, Dark Biscotti.
ReplyDeleteHave a Ball, All Black would help me out greatly!
ReplyDeleteI am a follower of Cardigan Empire

ReplyDeleteSkirts and dresses are so short these days - all these would be great staples to have around to turn a mini into work appropriate. I love the Have A Ball, All Black - the tulle end would look so fun under a short party skirt or dress!
ReplyDeleteChasingDavies@gmail.com
how do you pick just one??? I love the damsel in distress and silver spoon!
ReplyDeleteI love these! I like the eyefull of lace (ivory or white...both are lovely)
ReplyDeletethanks!
i like the silver spoon and Neenie's Cup of Tea in Chammomile.
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower!
ReplyDeleteI love them all, but Effie's Dessert in Lady Vanilla would be the most versatile for me, I think. Not too frilly OR too casual.
ReplyDeleteI also became a follower.
ReplyDeleteEyelet tower is darling!
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower.
ReplyDeleteOh why must Silver Spoon be sold out? My next favorite is Effie's Dessert in black - you can't go wrong with that!
ReplyDelete:)
Neenies cup of tea: black licorice. Definitely.
ReplyDeleteI love the "Eyefull of lace" slip, it would go great with summer dresses and skirts that are all made shorter for summer time!

ReplyDeleteI am dreaming of Having A Ball in that frothy delicious ivory slip.
ReplyDeleteI plan on asking if they can make slips in cotton for girls who aspire to wear slips in the summer whilst living in the desert.
I remain, as always, a devoted follower.

ReplyDeleteI don't know how long I've wanted the Effie's Dessert, Lady Vanilla skirt. It's fabulous!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy to hear of your ne arrival!
I Love mostly all of them! If i had to choose i would pick the white have a ball and the effies dessert in the dark biscotti, becuase when you find a skirt you really really like but it's too short so you can't wear it but if you had one of these then you could throw it on under neath them and i wouldn't have to worry about my skirt or dress being to short
ReplyDeleteNeenie's Cup of Tea, Black Licorice for sure.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure I could get a ton of use out of the Gold Have A Ball slip.
ReplyDeleteI like Neenie's Cup of Tea, Black Licorice. It looks very versatile!

ReplyDeleteLove the eyelet tower, it is devine!
ReplyDeleteSilver Spoon would solve at least one problem. Have a ball (in ivory, perhaps) would solve another.
ReplyDeleteHave a Ball in all black...I've been dreaming of this slip before I even knew it existed! Too many crinolines feature some awful pin-up vibe, while I want a Mrs. Draper look. Awesome site!
ReplyDeletei LOVE the Eyelet Tower one :)
ReplyDeleteBeing a fan from way back when I will have to go with Black Licorice. I am sure that is what your father would pick as well.
ReplyDeleteI love all of them but I think I would use damsel in distress the most.
ReplyDeleteI love the Damsel in Distress and Effie's Dessert, lady vanilla!
ReplyDeleteI love Effies Dessert! I stumbled on this website a long time ago and couldn't remember what it was called, so thank you!

ReplyDeleteI LOVE Dot the Great! The whimsy of it makes it totally up my alley! But I also love Damsel in Distress and Have a Ball in Antique Gold! I need one of these so bad. I have so many cute skirts and dresses that were a perfect fit before all the child bearing widened my hips. Now everything is just a little off from perfect. :(

ReplyDeleteI'm not a believer or is it a follower.
ReplyDeleteI love Neenie's cup of tea in black. I was JUST trying to figure out how to sew something like this!
ReplyDeleteand I am a follower
I like the Have a Ball 'Antique gold". It would go perfectly with a skirt that I never wear because it is just slightly too short. These are too amazing.
ReplyDeleteI like Damsel in Distress in Blush, and Neenie's Cup of Tea in black. So pretty!
ReplyDeleteI'm in love with Effie's Dessert, Lady Vanilla!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLove the Silver Spoon! I've been following for awhile. Love your tips and tricks!

ReplyDeleteNeenie's Cup of Tea, Black Licorice!!
ReplyDeleteI love NieNie's cup of tea... though a part of me wishes I was confident enough to wear Effie's Dessert!
ReplyDeleteI'm a follower!!! :)
ReplyDeleteI love Effie's Dessert, Lady Vanilla. It would be so feminine and sweet under my dresses instead of my bulky skirt I already use at home. What a great idea to make a stylish, slimming underskirt!
ReplyDeleteMmmm...the 'Have a Ball' in all-black is delicious.
ReplyDeleteLove- Effie's Dessert, Lady Vanilla.
ReplyDeleteI think I love the Have a ball in gold :)

I'm a faithful follower :)
ReplyDeleteI think the Silver Spoon would be perfect for me!
ReplyDeleteThe Have a Ball (in ivory) would work really well with my current wardrobe! Love your blog, it's so cute!
ReplyDeleteI have so many short skirts and dresses from high school that I don't want to wear any more because they seem so immodest. Especially since I have a part time job at my college now and need to dress like a grown up. =) I really like Neenie's Cup of Tea in Black Licorice and Effie's Dessert in Dark Biscotti!
ReplyDeleteMy dreams have come true! Vintage Hem is genius! Why didn't I think of it? Please oh please can I have a Silver Spoon?
ReplyDeletei love vintage hem. i grew up with one of the girls who started the business, but have never bought any of the slips. i've got a jcrew dress i never wear because it's too short and i think the have a ball in white would be perfect.
ReplyDeletei'm now a follower.
ReplyDeleteI have a specific dress that just isn't long enough and i have been dying to wear! The Eyelet Tower would be perfect for more than just this dress!!! Love it!
ReplyDeletei am officially a follower even though i have been for awhile now!
ReplyDeleteIf I have to choose just one it would be the Have a Ball Black.
ReplyDeleteHave A Ball (black) would work best for me. I have to wear black to work, and find that several of my black skirts and dresses are too short for work. Have a Ball would dress up the skirts/dresses and give me the needed length.
ReplyDeletelove eyelet tower. think it's sold out though.
ReplyDeleteI just love these!! They are such a great idea! I really like the Damsel In Distress slip! I'm not sure which one I like better though, that one or Have a Ball in white!!

I like the Neenie's cup of tea in chamomile. If I don't win, I'm going through my scrap pile to make some of these anyway. Great idea!
ReplyDeleteI love the Effie's Dessert, Dark Biscotti. How cute to have a peek-a-boo slip under a too-short skirt! Thank you for the chance at winning!
ReplyDeleteI am a follower!
ReplyDeleteOh my...I wish I had found this site sooner! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteI want them all, but forced to choose one, I would have to pick Effie's Dessert, in Lady Vsnilla, as it would go with most things.
Happy New Year!

ReplyDeleteI think I would like the Neenies cup of tea or have a ball all black, they are both such great layering essentials
ReplyDeleteHow cute! LOVE this store...thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI would definitely want the Damsel in Distress (Blush) or Dot the Great. I'm a sucker for polka dot anything! I don't have a specific skirt or dress in mind, but with my long legs and short dresses in style, I could easily find a use for one of these beautiful slips!
I love the eyelet tower and the Have a ball in white or black! I love them all!
ReplyDeleteI am a fan of the eyelet tower. I really love any eyelet fabric for the record, and my legs are very shy!
ReplyDeleteLoving "Damsel In Distress"!
ReplyDeleteI'm now a follower!
ReplyDeleteI love Effies Desert, but do wonder what color exactly is Biscotti? Anyway, I have several shorter dresses that this would look good with. I could add some tights and my ankel boots for a really cute look. Thanks!
