Wednesday's with Andy: How to Save Money

"I don't need advice on how to dress in women's clothing."  Andrew Bagley
Naked people have little or no influence in our society, thank you Mark Twain, but clothing is still just peripheral credentials.  Which is why I've invited a resident etiquette expert to assist us in polishing the unabridged package.

Below is the opening excerpt of a 100 item essay which has come to be known as The Bagley's Previously Unwritten Laws of Behavior and Conduct.  Penned by my adolescent beloved, every misspelling is authentic.

I can attest to the earnest behind this list.  On our honeymoon I suggested a hot chocolate, my newly wed husband responded that perhaps we should throw four dollars out the window instead.

Persistent pressure has loosened my loved one's purse strings ever so slightly, but he's still one of the best budgeters I know.  And below are a few updates to his budgeting philosophy
  1. Never pay a late fee or fine
No one's life was ever enriched by a cell phone overage
  2. Get it from the library
You'll end up with more money and less stuff to store
  3. Get your wife to cut your hair
Or cut it yourself and then teach her how to do it
  4. Share a meal and order water
    Fat wallets are much healthier
  5. Wait till it comes to video
You won't have to sneak in your own popcorn and candy or pay a babysitter
I too like to save money, mostly so I can spend on stuff I really, really want like yoga classes in Costa Rica and well planned adoption finalization parties and their accompanying Kate Spade uniforms.

But what do you do to save money?

  1. This comment had both Russ and I laughing. Your mister and I have a lot in common. Except I do like a nice hot chocolate now and then.

And is the adoption finalization going to be happening soon?

  2. Reminds me of my hubby! He'll do anything to save a dollar, I'm glad he is good at budgeting because I'm terrible at it.

  3. Oh my goodness! Andy & My Hubs may be long lost twins! I appreciate my husband's wanting to budget and save (I'll admit--I'm not great at either), but it would be nice to enjoy the occasional proverbial "hot chocolate" without feeling guilty.

  4. I love to buy clothes for my grandchildren. I shop at Ross Dress for Less or Children's Place and Carter's. I go on Tuesdays. At Ross it is Senior Citizens Day. At Carters you get double stamps on your purchase card so you get a discount later. I also use coupons at Children's Place. Even shorts on sale for $10.00 add up when you are buying for 6 little boys. But with your 20% off coupon it helps.

Doesn't a salad at Cafe Rio cost more than the alloted amount? Or are we cutting the price in half because we are sharing it?

  5. I cannot stop chuckling about the hot chocolate and $4 out the window.

  6. I wish my husband would save money. One issue we definitely have in our marriage. I'm a goodwill/used, library, rummage sale kind of girl. But I still like to go out to eat and do stuff like that. I think I'm a mix.

  7. I'm dying at the caption under the photo!!! His eyes say it all!!
Honestly, I like to spend - My lover likes to save- He is helping save more and I very often make him spend more. I like to think that it evens out some where in the middle.
But I do agree with ordering water all the time. I can save myself a hearty five bucks...Pellegrino is excused!!!

  8. Haha! This was really funny. Great post. The hubs and I are both savers, so it works out, but of course it gets boring saving money and not spending it. I'm the only one that will splurge (like on a container of ice cream for the whole month), mostly because he doesn't do the shopping.

  9. The library is the best kept secret for saving money on books and movies! I carefully keep track of my monthly purchases and put them all on a credit card with no annual fee and cash back rewards. I also use Ebates before I purchase anything and always look for free shipping. I make my own Chai concentrate at home, so no $4 tea for me!

  10. Tell Andrew thanks for the plug for the library from his favorite library person.

  11. Love the list of rules!

We're kind of half and half at our house. We're both fairly good at saving but will occasionally make purchases that we realize aren't the best use of our money. I'm trying to be better at cooking things that are cheaper/taste better than some restaurants and better at sewing clothes for my daughter.
