Essential Wardrobe: The Classic White Blouse

The classic white blouse likes everyone and everyone likes the classic white blouse. Denim likes it, trousers like it, skirts like it, jumpers like it. If one garment of clothing were going to act as student body president, it would be the classic white blouse. Below are some candidates for your empire.

Upper Figure Options
Closet empires are not equal opportunity employers, and the Upper Figure need not employ white blouses with little gaping buttons for the benefit of tradition. Keep it clean with an open neckline to break up the line of the bosom. Fit the girls first and tailor the rest. Apply belting and tucking assistants as appropriate to offer appropriate shape and style.

Middle Figure Options: The keywords are cascade and camouflage. Show off your arms, your lovely neck, but keep the soft lines of your figure under banded tops and tunic style cuts with a finished hem that will not be tucked in.

Lower Figure Options: A defined waist with a skirted peplum to cascade over the hips, never fails a southern endowed lady.

Hourglass Options: Tie it, belt it, band it: whatever you need to do to show off the center of your torso.

Linear Options: Keep the neckline high and embellish to allude to volume and curves.

If you have warm undertones in your complexion consider wearing an ivory or honey beige as opposed to a cool white.

  1. I love white blouses but am extremely pale and white leaves me even more washed out. How do I make the white blouse work for me?

  3. I have about six white blouses I love. Probably a few too many... but they are hard to resist.

  5. I am obsessed with white shirts. I enjoyed your round up of the white shirt.

Sorry if you saw some random person pointing at you as you were coming out of Guru Palace on Sat. night. That would be me and I wanted to stop and say hi but hubby kept on driving.

I've always wanted to eat @ the Guru Palace. Would you recommend?

  6. Julie, I can't tell for sure but it looks like you have warm undertones in your skin. I would try an ivory or light beige which is less harsh than stark white.

  7. Natalie, all the pictures actually link to the stores where they are available for purchase. The second to last shirt is available at JC Penney. For Easter I would look at shoes in fresh midtones (between pastels and fully saturated colors) like emerald green, turquoise, shiarapelli pink, amethyst purple, etc. Hooray for Easter dresses!

  8. Christina-
Guru Palace is actually quite good: I like the corma. Next time we should go together and reserve the table where you get to sit on pillows on the floor.

  9. I can't seem to ever have enough white tops...my closet is full of them!

I don't know if anyone has ever heard of CAbi, but they have a number of amazing white tops this season like the Ingenue Hoodie, Pique Vest, Artist Coat, Bow Tee, and Peasant Top. Their clothes are only sold through Independent Consultants, but you should definitely check them out online and take a look at their Spring '09 Collection. www.cabionline.com
